What We Are Doing
South Florida just welcomed the first annual “Unforgettable Prom” for children with cancer. The event took place on Friday, April 30, 2010 at arguably the finest luxury resort around: The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale. The Friends of Scott Foundation, an organization committed to helping families receive the support they need to cope with this devastating disease, helped host the event.
We had hundreds of children ages 12 to 19 attend and were offered this event at no cost to the children or their families. With the help of sponsors, donations, and volunteers, we provided everything necessary to help make this prom unlike any other. Everything from tuxedoes for the boys, dresses and hair and make-up for the girls, door-to-door limousine transportation, a red carpet entrance, prom photos, food, music and much more were all provided for these courageous teens. We had the involvement of several local athletes and celebrities who added to the excitement of the evening.
Unfortunately most of these kids can’t and haven’t attend a traditional school prom because of their disease. But on prom night, we treated them like movie stars and gave them a night to forget about their illness. They came in wheelchairs and wore wigs, but they all wore a huge smile as they arrived in limousines to walk the red carpet. It was truly an “unforgettable” event.
If you or someone you know would like to discuss getting involved either as a sponsor or by contributing on volunteer level for a future event please see the What You Can Do page.
Sincerely,
Brandon Opre
